How do I request two articles to be merged Maestrofin (talk) 01:04, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Per Proposing a merge,
If the need for a merge is obvious, editors can be bold and simply do it. [...] Articles that have been separate for a long time should usually be discussed first, especially those on controversial topics. [...] Create a discussion [...] usually done on the proposed destination page's talk page.
- There are instructions on the exact steps in said guidance. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 01:38, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Ref. number 5 does not have a page number - is this a problem? Thanks for any advice or repairs to this page that you might consider necessary. 115.70.23.77 (talk) 04:26, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Political issues aside (speaking only with regard to general page numbers), it probably doesn't because Google Books usually doesn't show page numbers and that appears to be where it's accessed from. It having a quote is better than nothing but it would be better if it had one, yes PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:52, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- PARAKANYAA, the book in question is a 2023 ebook published by Rutgers University Press. Ebooks by their very nature lack page numbers. If Google Books displays content of a scanned paper book, then page numbers will be shown. Cullen328 (talk) 06:02, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

DRAFT: Francsico R Adriano Sr.[edit]
Hello, I have a draft and I want to submit for approval Francsico R Adriano Sr. I clicked publish but it does not seem to be submitted, please advise. Abehonest (talk) 07:55, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Abehonest, I submitted the draft as you requested. However, it is likely to be declined because it is poorly referenced. Please read Your first article and improve the draft accordingly as soon as possible. Cullen328 (talk) 09:43, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- "Publish" doesn't mean "publish to the main encyclopaedia", it just means "Save my work" - it was changed to emphasise that everything in Wikipedia (including drafts, user pages, talk pages) are publicly visible to those who know look for them. ColinFine (talk) 12:40, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Spammer claiming to be wikipedia administartor proposing to boost my page[edit]
Hello, I just want to alert you that there is a spammer targeting academia, which is claiming to be a Wikipedia editor and proposing to spice up your biography (I guess for a fee). I'm not sure it is a good idea to post the full text of the spam or the name of the person in question (maybe a pseudonym), I'll do it if you confirm it is ok. Otherwise, you can contact me at 18bkbm5lf _at_ mozmail.com (or via talk page, if I get a notification) and I'll provide the full mail.
cheers

- It's almost certainly a scam. A lot of this happens. See, for example, Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2024-02-13/Disinformation report. Maproom (talk) 08:43, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Scams happen everywhere, very little that can be done about it. When we find users like this, we block them, but usernames are cheap so they easily come back. There is a way to see all my current logged in sessions in different devices and to log out of them? Yilku1 (talk) 12:34, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

How do I report a user?[edit]
. 109.166.132.227 (talk) 15:18, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- There are lots of different answers to that question, depending on the circumstances. Sometimes, the answer is "you don't report them, you open a discussion with them, to try and reach consensus". Sometimes the answer is "you don't report them, you put a user warning on their talk page". And sometimes you do report them, but there are different places to do this, depending on what the issue is. ColinFine (talk) 16:29, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Old version of the image is displayed instead of the new one[edit]

Do I use the via or publisher parameters for this?[edit]
When I'm using citation templates, and there's a news source that was republished elsewhere (not about news agencies, ik the agency parameter) by a different source, do I put the republishing organization in the "via" or "publisher" parameters? I'm aware that if the non-aggregate news source is available that is preferred, but the one I most often run into this case with is an African news website (allAfrica) which has a lot that isn't accessible elsewhere anymore. PARAKANYAA (talk) 19:10, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

Guideline on name changes[edit]
I'm writing an article on a German who immigrated to Latin America in the early 20th century. As was customary at the time, they took a Hispanicized version of their birth name – by which they are more well-known – without making any actual legal name change (that I know of). In that case, how would one go about writing their name in the article lead? I've dotted down a few forms:
- Spanish, born: Pablo Busch Wiesneer (born Paul Busch; 4 November 1867 – c. 1940)...
- Spanish first: Pablo Busch Wiesner (German: Paul Busch; 4 November 1867 – c. 1940) ...
- Birth name first: Paul Busch (Spanish: Pablo Busch Wiesner; 4 November 1867 – c. 1940) ...
- Both bold: Paul Busch (4 November 1867 – c. 1940), also known as Pablo Busch Wiesner, ...
Which would you go with, or is there a different form you prefer? Let me know. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 21:55, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Put the better-known name first and as the article's title per WP:COMMONNAME. Bolding the other name is IMO preferred. Definitely no italics though. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:17, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Another question would be if there's any precedent for individuals with multiple legal names. It's not a common occurrence, but happens occasionally when one has two nationalities. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 22:36, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography § Changed names,
In some cases, a subject may have changed their full name at some point after birth. In these cases, the birth name may be given in the lead as well, if relevant:[a]
- From Jack Benny: Jack Benny (born Benjamin Kubelsky, February 14, 1894 – December 26, 1974) ...
- Regarding multiple names,
Multiple former names may be mentioned in the lead, boldfaced if they redirect to the article. However, it is not always appropriate to list every previous name of a subject, only the birth name and those that were in use during the period of notability.
- Bill de Blasio (born Warren Wilhelm Jr., May 8, 1961) is a politician .... He was briefly known as Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm ...
The names should be distributed throughout the lead to mark major transitions in the subject's life:
- Augustus (63 BC – 14 AD) was a Roman emperor .... He was born Gaius Octavius Thurinus into a wealthy family .... He assumed the name Octavian after his adoption ...
- Incidentally, regarding the language template, per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility § Other languages,
If text should not be italicized—such as the names of places or people—it is possible to add italic=no to override the default behaviour.
- Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 04:02, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense. In my case, though, I'm dealing with an individual who would have regularly used both names, dependent on which country they were in. He would use "Pablo" in Latin America and "Paul" in Germany, throughout his life.
- The closest example I can approximate of one article using multiple translations of a given name would be the German monarchs William/Wilhelm I and Frederick/Friedrich III. In such a case, perhaps?:
- Pablo Busch Wiesener or Paul Busch (4 November 1867 – 3 May 1950).
- I think I've just answered my own question. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 04:13, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- According to the guideline, the key is their birth name. There is different guidance for monarchs though. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 04:21, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Would the birth name take precedence even if the translated name is the common name? Krisgabwoosh (talk) 04:25, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Actually in the examples above, the birth name does not take precedence. It may be good to follow this guidance in order to note which was the birth name, highlighting thus that the other name is not the birth name. But in this case for changed names. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 05:05, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- I think I'll just go with: Pablo Busch Wiesener (born Paul Busch) and add an explanatory note. Can never go wrong with explanatory notes! Thanks for the help.
- Uh... Sincerely Krisgabwoosh (talk) 06:33, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

Notes
- ^ Wikipedia may consider that marginally notable living persons (e.g., subjects in the public eye only due to a single event) have privacy interests in their birth names. Such concerns are not raised by biographies of the deceased, nor in most cases those of major public figures who are still living.

Regarding other users editing my talk page[edit]
Hello all, I recently noticed that I have received two notifications regarding my talk page. One comment/question was posted and then, before I could get to it, another random (to me, based on this user's edit log) user removed it for no reason. This wasn't a case of users asking me to remove anything inappropriate or anything; my talk page is a pretty bare place where I mostly tend to receive notifications for occasionally accidentally linking to disambiguation pages. I guess my question is: can anyone explain a situation like this, or has anyone experienced a situation like this? I still have the links to the two edits, if that would help with anything.
Thanks!! EPBeatles (talk) 01:02, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, anyone can see your talk page history, it looks as though a new editor posted on your talk page and another editor thought the edit wasn't constructive and reverted it. Generally editors shouldn't delete posts on other editors' user pages, see Wikipedia:User pages. TSventon (talk) 01:43, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Pinging user:14 novembre, who removed the edit in question. Meters (talk) 01:46, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- It appears that the IP you undid on Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) [1] created an account to ask you about the edit, but did not add a link or diff, so it should not have been removed from your talk page. Meters (talk) 01:53, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Meters and @TSventon. So I can revert that back so I can respond to the IP who created an account? I was even more surprised by the "random" edit because it appears that that user does not engage in much (if any) editing for music-related articles here on Wikipedia. Thanks!! How to revert bulk incorrect changes?[edit]
(UPDATED - SEE BELOW) I noticed that Wondabyne has changed a large number of articles about Australian places to insert a timezone of UTC+10. The problem is that this is wrong. Entire states observe Daylight Saving Time ("summer time") for much of the year, including right now. Is there some way to do a bulk revert? Gronk Oz (talk) 05:26, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- There might(?) be an admin tool that can do it, without that using redwarn or twinkle and doing them individually is probably fastest, although some (including [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]) have AEST as the "normal" time and AEDT as the summer time, so (from what I understand) some are right, since both are observed. (Although I don't see any sources so there's that and I'm not sure how similar the daylight time observations in Australia compare with Arizona) Shaws username . talk . 05:43, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

How to fix a NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID error.[edit]
I've been receiving a NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID error which means I cannot visit en.wikipedia.org at all because the website uses HSTS.
This is a new problem that has popped up in the past couple of days. I am running a browser called Brave at version 1.41.100 which has been working fine up until a couple days ago.
Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Thanks for your help! Cbird1057 (talk) 06:25, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

Creating a totally new page with the same/similar subject[edit]
As I explained the situation before, I would like to edit (but I see that it's not possible) the content of the Transactional Analysis wikipedia page. It will be more than an edit because I think this content needs to be fully changed so that people who are interested in it could get a much better insight on it. My question is now; can I create a totally new page about Transactional Analysis with a new content and proper references, with the same name or maybe with a very similar name? Would this be accepted and approved by Wikipedia team? many thanks in advance for your support and response. BowlbyMaya (talk) 09:01, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- If you think that the article needs to be wholesale rewritten, it might be a good idea to discuss this on the talk page first, to see if other editors agree or have other ideas, before you invest the time needed to perform the rewrite. 331dot (talk) 09:33, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- BowlbyMaya, the answer is "no". Wikipedia has one and only one article about each discrete topic. are a violation of WP:Righting great wrongs. That objective is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia. Greek island written weirdly[edit]
- My last post on the help desk, this time about a Greek island written weirdly.
Hello, inn the article Leros, the article is what I say it’s written weirdly. It mentions the article Mile, as well as the nautical mile and the kilometer, as well as the “Traditional music” section and finally, this mention. It says “from which it can reach from a nine-hour ferry ride or a 45-minute flight to Athens.” Aegean and Olympic serve the main airport of the island on a 1-hour flight. Can someone explain why this? (P.S. This is my last post on the help desk. Also mentions the Italian language. Finally, the ferry departs from Piraeus. I’ve been to Greece in 2021, specifically Athens.) 2.103.231.248 (talk) 18:28, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- The lede is just a brief summary. The Transportation section says the ferry leaves from Piraeus and also other locations. Information in an article must come from pubished sources, not personal knowledge. RudolfRed (talk) 22:39, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Then who added such sections? Let me know if you finished looking up the edit history and found that user/IP. 2.103.231.248 (talk) 10:40, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- The references to mile and nautical mile are simply parenthesised conversions for those more familiar with these units. It's not weird, putting in conversions is normal practice. I've also tidied up the "20 miles to Turkey" putting the kilometres in the prose and the miles in the parentheses. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:40, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Who added that section? IP? User? Once again, as I said earlier, look up the edit history. Any answers are highly appreciated. 2.103.231.248 (talk) 17:12, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Signature issue[edit]
- I'm starting this with a bullet point to illustrate the issue: any time I respond on a Talk page with a bullet point (such as !votes in a discussion) or pound sign (for a numbered list), it kicks my signature onto a new line. This only happens for bulleted discussions. Any idea what's causing it & how to correct the behavior?
— The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 19:11, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- @HandThatFeeds: You should be able to fix this by adding
~~~~
in the location where you want your signature to appear. For example,* This is a message. ~~~~
produces: - This is just because of how the reply tool works – it will add your signature outside of any lists unless you specify where exactly you want it to go. Tollens (talk) 19:16, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
That page doesn't appear to have such a history so that request would almost certainly be declined. Tollens (talk) 20:40, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- ahhh i see, okay good to know thank you. NotQualified (talk) 21:06, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
Is it just me?[edit]
When i click in the search box, a list of previous searches pops up of things i don't remember searching at all. At first I thought it was only me, but now i'm thinking of a similar case that happened on youtube years ago, in which i thought it was only me and then i found out it was happening to lots more people. Maybe this is similar? - Joaquin89uy (talk) 23:11, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- When you just click in the search box, your web browser may bring up some suggestions on its own, which likely have nothing to do with Wikipedia. Once you start typing, then there will be some suggested matches from Wikipedia articles. Bear in mind that the Wikipedia search is extremely primitive compared to the typical web search engine. It's mostly useful when you know the name of the article, or at least the beginning of the article name, though it does search article content if you don't accept any of the suggestions. There are slightly advanced and more advanced features, but nothing that "just works" the way that Google does. Fabrickator (talk) 03:19, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Eeli Aalto's photographs of Jumalan teatteri[edit]
Eeli Aalto, a Finnish artist and director, was the only member of the audience at the "Jumalan teatteri" event in Oulu on 17 January 1987 who watched the entire performance, and took the only known photographs of the event. His photographs can be seen at least here and here. The photographs are of quite bad quality because of the hectic situation at the time and because photography technology 37 years ago was less advanced than now. Can these pictures be used in the article Jumalan teatteri? And if so, how would I go about using them? JIP | Talk 23:49, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- JIP the photographs are likely to be covered by copyright, so they can't be uploaded to Commons. As the group is no longer active, it may be possible to claim fair use and upload an image to Wikipedia following the guidance in Wikipedia:Non-free content. I have not done this myself. What counts as being legally recognized? Census records? PARAKANYAA (talk) 00:09, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @PARAKANYAA, your question may be misunderstanding, so I would like you to clarify your question above in order to help our volunteers easily understand and answer your query. 2001:EE0:4BC7:72C0:21CD:A8F5:EB1C:410F (talk) 04:42, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @PARAKANYAA, in the United States census records may be enough to establish notability, but there isn't really a standard of "legal recognition" that works all around the world. A discussion about this came up a few months ago on Wikipedia talk:Notability (geographic features). At least in the US, a good point of legal recognition is to find the location in Geographic Names Information System, and most geography articles that get put up for deletion are not listed in the census for the respective country they exist in.
- Overall, if there is proof that a place was populated at one point and that was recorded by a government, that is a good start for legal recognition. Reconrabbit 05:22, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
R Kelly image[edit]
I am really having quite a difficult time believing that an image is impossible to upload at WP other than the public domain mugshot of rapper R Kelly. The BLP article has been tennis-matched with reverted edits due to the fact that WP continually speedy deletes any and all images of the BLP. I have attempted on several occasions to request an image (Talk Page request template) and uploaded 2.5 WikiCommons category Free Share files that were immediately templated for speedy deletion without discussion. Would someone please just upload an image that passes the WP allowance for this BLP that can be used here? Enough is enough already. Thanks Maineartists (talk) 00:38, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Maineartists: Sorry, but we do not make copyright law. Congress makes the law. The Wikimedia foundation's lawyers have determined that the "fair use" doctrine does not apply to pictures of any person who is alive, because it is theoretically possible for a photographer to take another picture of the subject and release it uncer a compatible licnese. SO If you personally can take a picture of this artist, then you can upload it. If you can find a picture that has been released under a compatible license, we can help you. -Arch dude (talk) 02:17, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Blah. Blah. Blah. Try spelling correctly before you post here. I've seen image after image get "squeaked" past WP policy because editors know the ins-and-outs of uploading by-pass get-arounds. Stop saying "we" as if you are the WP supreme court with a gavel. Either upload an image yourself, or just point me in the direction of how to upload an image of the BLP in question. If not, then just step aside, Betty. I'm through with all this help desk mumbo-jumbo. There are certainly WP reasons as to how and why an image can be uploaded when all other images are not accessible. Maineartists (talk) 02:43, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- That's a bold strategy. Let's see if it pays off for you... --Onorem (talk) 02:51, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Maineartists, your mocking and contemptuous attitude toward copyright law and Wikipedia's image use policy will lead to a block if you do not drop the subject and move on. If you have actual evidence that other editors are evading and deliberately violating policy, then present that specific evidence or forget about it. Cullen328 (talk) 03:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Can a user remove some conversation from its talk page which may be negative against that user? Like a user removed some topics instead of archiving [7][8][9][10] which were of course not ideal or positive for him. Jonharojjashi (talk) 02:50, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Changing a Redirect to Disambiguation Page?[edit]
I've recently created an article for foam depopulation, who's other common name is foaming. Initially I wanted to just add a redirect for foaming -> foam depopulation. However, Foaming currently redirects to foam. Should I try changing foaming to a disambiguation page or do something else here? If changing it to a disambiguation page, how best to go about that?
Thanks! TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 03:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X If "foam" is the primary topic, and "foaming" is ambiguous between two articles, you could use Template:Redirect. If "foam" is the primary topic, and "foaming" is ambiguous between three or more articles the disambiguation page would be Foaming (disambiguation). There is some guidance on formatting a disambiguation page at WP:DABSTYLE, but I usually start with a copy of an existing disambiguation page. TSventon (talk) 03:36, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- As far as I'm aware it's just two articles here, so add something like
- to the foam article instead of changing the redirect? TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 04:22, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ok reading through Wikipedia:Redirect#What_needs_to_be_done_on_pages_that_are_targets_of_redirects seems to suggest that makes sense to do it like that, so going to go edit that page to add that. Probably with the {{redirect2}} template since its got some already existing redirects mentioned there TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 05:06, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Infobox[edit]
Is there any infobox for capital punishment/execution type of articles? Imperial[AFCND] 06:38, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- You could look around at Category:Infobox templates, but otherwise it might be helpful if you gave us the names of one or more articles to which you'd like to add such an infobox. Based on your question I'm not even sure whether you're asking with regard to articles that discuss means of execution, or articles that discuss famous executions. DonIago (talk) 06:51, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I was about to create an article for the execution of Sambhaji (Passes WP:GNG). I will give a short note on that. Sambhaji was the second King of the Maratha empire in India. During the Deccan Wars, he was captured and executed. There are many records with many different or similar accounts about his execution detailing the event. So , is it appropriate to use Template:infobox death? Imperial[AFCND] 08:01, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- For additional information, the article would be similar to that of Execution of Charles I. Imperial[AFCND] 08:06, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Image of an warship that I took[edit]
When I took a picture of the ex-USS Maricopa County laid up at the south of Vietnam, I considered posting it here yet my doubts got the better of me as it's technically a military ship still in service and would constitute a copyright violation.
Six months onward, I am now considering posting said image again, yet I would have to confer to someone experienced on here... So should I post it here? e (talk) 09:44, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Browhatwhyamihere, when you ask at WP:MCQ, you might add some explanation. If it was you that took the picture, then what exactly would "constitute a copyright violation", and whose copyright would be violated, and how? -- Hoary (talk) 12:34, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Research question[edit]
I am looking to see if there is enough sources on Master Boot Record (the artist, known irl as Victor Love) to be notable enough to warrant an article. The interesting thing is that Love also has a side project known as Keygen Church, and I was wondering if I used sources that are on Keygen Church (and if i have enough information on Keygen to warrant notability), they could be used to create a MBR article. My reasoning here is that (to my knowledge) MBR is more well known, and since the same person is behind it that they could: a. be in a single article and b. use sources for Keygen to also provide information for MBR (ofc given that it actually mentions MBR). Is this an incoherent rant? Is my reasoning sound? Looking for a second (and more experienced) opinion.
