BG (Ret) Sean Mulholland – SF Officer – RIP

BG Sean Mulholland Special Forces

BG (Retired) Sean Mulholland passed away. He was a retired U.S. Army officer with numerous tours and assignments with Special Forces and special operations. He commanded from the ODA to SOC level within the special operations community. His last command was with Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH) in Florida. He had previously commanded the 7th Special Forces Group.

Sean Mulholland served most of his career in Latin America with frequent tours in Afghanistan. He also served tours in Bosnia and Iraq. Most of his career was with Special Forces as either a commander or Operations Officer.

Assignments

SOCSOUTH. He assumed command of SOCSOUTH in October 2012. The SOF organization has Latin America as its regional focus providing special operations teams – CA, SF, AFSOC, NSW – to various countries on training missions and persistent engagement in South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. SOCSOUTH is based at Homestead Air Reserve Base in Florida.

USSOCOM. Sean Mulholland served as the Deputy J3 (Operations) at United States Special Operations Command from October 2011 to August 2012. He left to command of SOCSOUTH.

RC North. BG Mulholland was the Deputy Commanding General of Regional Command North (RC North) from April 2010 to October 2011 at Camp Marmel located in Mazar e Sharif in northern Afghanistan. RC North was mostly filled with troops from European nations where Germany was the ‘framework nation’ in charge.

USSOCOM. He served as the Executive Officer to the Commander of USSOCOM from June 2009 to March 2010.

7th SFGA. Mulholland was the commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (at the time located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina). During this time frame (Dec 2007 to Jun 2009) he deployed as the commander of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A). His previous assignments include time with the 10th Mountain Division and then with the 3/75th Ranger Regiment as a platoon leade. He later attended the Special Forces Qualification Course and served with 7th SFGA and 1st SWTG. He would later serve with an elite SOF unit in Virginia and spend some time on fellowship with the CIA.

Sean’s Early Years

Sean was a graduate of Morris Catholic High School in Denville, New Jersey where he was an All-State Wrestler. He was the captain of the football and wrestling teams. In college – Catholic University – he was a free safety and captain of the football team and also played Rugby. While in college he paid some of his expenses by bartending. He had aspirations of a medical career but soon decided that Special Forces was where he wanted to serve.

Mulholland received his Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and his Bachelors Degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He also attended the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where he earned his second Masters Degree.

Obituary and Services

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the JFK Chapel on Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
